A different way in

Talent is everywhere.
Opportunity
should be too.

Your grades. Your background. Who you know. None of it tells the whole story of what you could make.

Misfits is a place to give that possibility a serious chance. Builders meet creators. Ideas meet an audience. You get people who’ll teach you what’s missing and help with the business behind the thing.

Make it real.

Bring technical curiosity and an idea. Learn to build it, test it with real people, and find your first users. You don’t need to arrive knowing everything.

Own a part of it.

You know your audience. Help shape a product they’d want and explore building something you have a stake in, beyond the next brand deal.

02 / Before the familiar names

They built it
anyway.

The early chapters rarely look like the finished thing. Four reminders that a setback doesn’t have to be the last word.

01AirbnbSold cereal to keep the idea alive.

Brian Chesky, Joe Gebbia
& Nathan Blecharczyk

The founders helped fund the company with breakfast cereal. Early investors questioned how big the idea could become. They kept meeting users and working on the product.

The idea grew into a global platform for stays and travel experiences.

02CanvaAnother rejection. A clearer vision.

Melanie Perkins, Cliff Obrecht
& Cameron Adams

Perkins recalls repeated investor rejections over location, stage and valuation. The team kept answering the hard questions and finding the people to build its vision.

By its 2025 year-end review, Canva reported 260 million monthly users.

03RingLeft the pitch without a deal.

Jamie Siminoff

His 2013 Shark Tank appearance ended without a deal. The exposure brought in sales, and he kept developing DoorBot into Ring.

Amazon acquired Ring in 2018. In 2025, it described a business helping millions of people worldwide.

04Dyson5,127 prototypes. Still another way.

James Dyson

After 5,127 prototypes, major vacuum manufacturers still rejected his bagless design. Dyson took it into production himself, launching the DC01 in 1993.

The company went on to develop products across floorcare, air treatment and haircare.
